But whether you\u2019re holidaying at home or abroad, make\nsure your property is protected.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>Many of us\nhave fully embraced the national DIY craze during our year at home, while\nothers have purchased expensive electronics and entertainment systems to while\naway the hours. If this is you, chances are your buildings and home contents\ncover may be out of date.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong>Investing in home improvements <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>Brits poured their cash into improving their homes during the pandemic, with a report<sup>1<\/sup> revealing homeowners spent \u00a355bn (or \u00a34,035.70 each) on renovating their property between March and July 2020. Two thirds of property owners (66%) did some form of DIY during this period, with 27% doing so with the intention of increasing their home\u2019s value.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>So, if\nyou\u2019ve invested in your property or purchased expensive home contents this\nyear, it could pay to check that your cover is still adequate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong>Lock up tight<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>Failing to\nlock up properly when you go away could invalidate your insurance, even if you\ndo have adequate cover. As well as your doors and windows, make sure that you\nsecure skylights, cat flaps, gates and anything else that could leave your\nproperty open to unwelcome guests. Activating your alarm (if you have one) may\nalso be a condition of your insurance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong>Away for more than a month? <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>If so, you\nmight need to take out unoccupied property cover \u2013 most home insurance policies\nwill only allow you to leave your property standing vacant for 30 days.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><sup>1<\/sup>money.co.uk, 2020<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong><em>As a mortgage is secured\nagainst your home or property, it could be repossessed if you do not keep up\nmortgage repayments.
