The\nextended bank holiday\nweekend provided an opportunity for people and communities throughout the UK to\ncome together to celebrate the historic milestone. Official events over the\nlong weekend included Trooping the Colour, Beacon Lighting, a Service of\nThanksgiving, a Party at the Palace and a Pageant topping off the celebrations\non Sunday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>With four days\nof festivities for the nation to enjoy, leading trade bodies UKHospitality, the British Institute of Innkeeping (BII),\nHospitality Ulster, and the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) expect the hospitality\nindustry to have enjoyed a bumper weekend of takings, with predictions of a 22% increase in trade over the four-day celebrations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>In a joint statement, the four\ntrade organisations outlined, <em>\u2018At last, our beleaguered sector is able to\nlook forward to the sort of trading period that will give it a massive boost as\nit sets out on the long road to post-pandemic recovery.<\/em><em> There are still lots of hurdles\nthat businesses have to clear on the way back to profitability \u2013 huge cost\nincreases, a staffing crisis, rising COVID rent repayments and too much red\ntape \u2013 but these four days will do wonders for income and for employee morale.\nIt\u2019s also a wonderful, celebratory moment for millions of people\nwho\u2019ve been denied the opportunity to socialise with friends and family for far\ntoo long, and we sense there\u2019s a real pent-up desire among the population to\nget out and enjoy itself.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>With the Jubilee weekend\nexpected to provide a massive boost to UK retail and hospitality businesses,\nrevellers are expected to have spent in excess of \u00a32bn on food and drink\nsupplies, while pubs, bars and restaurants are hoping for \u00a33bn in sales, \u00a3400m more than during a normal\nThursday to Sunday in May. UK retail footfall was forecast to rise 8% over the weekend,\nwith a 10% jump on high streets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong>PM<\/strong> <strong>wins vote of\nno confidence<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>On Monday night,\nConservative MPs voted by 211 to 148 to retain Boris Johnson as Prime Minister\nand party leader. The\nresult means the PM cannot be challenged from within the Conservative ranks for\none full year. The vote was called after 54\nConservative&nbsp;MPs&nbsp;submitted letters to the 1922 Committee demanding\nthat Boris Johnson\u2019s leadership be contested.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong>Help to Buy application deadline brought\nforward<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>Homes England\nhave revealed that the government\u2019s Help to Buy scheme is winding down two months\nearlier than initially planned. The deadline has been\nupdated on the government\u2019s website, <em>\u2018The Help to Buy: Equity Loan scheme\nwill close to new applications at 6pm on 31 October 2022,\u2019<\/em> brought forward\nfrom 31 December 2022.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>Recent data published by the Department\nfor Levelling up, Housing and Communities showed that 8,913 properties were purchased\nwith an equity loan under the scheme in Q4 2021, down 41% on Q4 2019, prior to\nthe pandemic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong><em>\u201cBlockbuster\u201d<\/em><\/strong><strong> jobs data across the pond<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>The\nlatest data from the US Labor Department showed that US employers added more new jobs than expected in May, with\npayrolls rising by 390,000, exceeding\nforecasts of a 325,0000 rise. Although the increase was the slowest for a year,\nthe unemployment rate held at 3.6% for the third consecutive month. The annual rate of inflation in the US\nwas 8.3% in the year to April, a small drop from 8.5% recorded for March which\nwas the highest rate since 1981. On Friday, US\nPresident Joe Biden said that the economy was moving to a <em>&#8220;new period\nof stable, steady growth.&#8221;<\/em> He continued, \u201c<em>We aren\u2019t likely to see the kind\nof blockbuster job reports month after month like we had over this past year,\nbut that\u2019s a good thing.&nbsp;That\u2019s a sign of a healthy economy with steady\ngrowth, rising wages for working families, everyday costs easing up, and\nshrinking the deficit.
