This figure was\nboosted by a record \u00a316.9bn in special dividends, three times the normal level.\nSpecial dividends are non-recurring and usually larger than a typical dividend\npayment. For 2022, the report expects underlying growth of 5% to bring total\npayouts to \u00a381bn, with banks and oil companies expected to be the main\ncontributors. Expectations are that special dividends are likely to be much lower\nthis year. Despite headwinds such as inflation and new COVID variants, Managing\nDirector of Corporate Markets EMEA at Link Group Ian Stokes believes, <em>\u201cThe\nrecovery in UK dividends is not complete, but the easiest part of the catch up\nis now behind us\u2026 As the pandemic continues, it would be easy to take a knife\nto our expectations for dividends for the coming year. We are, however,\ncautiously optimistic that most sectors can deliver growth.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t risk a\ndouble tax hit on your pension<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>Data from the Financial Conduct Authority<sup>2<\/sup> shows that the\nnumber of pension pots accessed for the first time in 2020\/21 totalled 596,080;\nthe number fully withdrawn totalled 341,404. Only 33% of consumers taking money\nfrom their pension for the first time took regulated advice.
