If the thought of words such as \u2018Equities\u2019 and \u2018Investment ISAs\u2019\ngets your heart racing, you\u2019re not alone: new research<sup>1<\/sup> has shown\nthat financial terms really can make people feel anxious.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong>How can this\nbe tested? <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>Researchers\nused a variation of the Emotional Stroop Test, which measures information\nprocessing speed when naming the ink colour of different words, to compare\nresponse times for neutral words like \u2018pencil\u2019 with investment-specific terms\nlike \u2018ISA.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>Nearly\ntwo-thirds of participants had slower response times and higher error rates for\nfinancial trigger words, suggesting stress reactions. Additionally, 44.3%\nexperienced a raised heart rate and 11.5% reported an increase in\nbreathlessness.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>The terms\n\u2018Stockbroker\u2019, \u2018Asset Manager\u2019 and \u2018Investment Risk\u2019 produced three of the\nslowest reaction times. Other investment-related words like \u2018Bond Fund\u2019 and\n\u2018Equities\u2019 also took longer than average.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t have a\nfear of finance <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>Stripping back\njargon can help people think more clearly about investments and pensions. In\nsupporting research, Barclays found that 71% of respondents don\u2019t feel confident\nenough to invest money in the stock market, with a quarter feeling \u2018frightened\u2019\nby the idea.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>Despite these\nfears, people do want to improve their financial knowledge, with three in five\nparticipants keen to learn more about financial terminology. We can relieve the\nstress of investments and pensions \u2013 and take the fear out of financial\nplanning!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><sup>1<\/sup>Barclays,\n2021<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong>The value of investments and income from them may go down.
