Costs such as university tuition fees can leave upcoming\ngenerations with substantial debts even before they enter the workplace, making\nit harder for them to save for a deposit on their first property purchase.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>The impact of\ncoronavirus has added a new dimension to the problem, with disrupted education\nand a battered economy raising uncertainties about future earnings potential.\nMany grandparents who have been fortunate enough to be able to help the\nnext-generation-but-one along the rocky road to their lifetime dreams and\nambitions, have been able to increase their help.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>Evidence that\ngrandchildren have often benefited financially from locked-down grandparents,\nunable to spend on holidays and eating out, has been provided through research\nconducted by Scottish Friendly Assurance Society. The financial mutual company\nsurveyed a sample of grandparents who were already investing for their\ngrandchildren to see what influence the pandemic had exerted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong>Almost half\nincrease their largesse <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>Responses\nshowed that 47% of those grandparents had increased amounts given to their\ngrandchildren during the previous 12 months. The main drivers were found to be\na reduction in their own spending opportunities during the COVID-19\nrestrictions and a heightened desire to create a larger savings buffer for\ntheir grandchildren at a time of economic uncertainty.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>Jill Mackay of\nScottish Friendly commented<em>, \u201cThere are grandparents who do have the\ndiscretionary income to put towards family savings and this can be a big\nsupport. It\u2019s also encouraging to see grandparents deciding to invest more of\ntheir money rather than save it in cash.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong><em>The value\nof investments and income from them may go down.
