Good news came over the weekend\nas a significant vaccination milestone was surpassed. Tipping over the marker,\nafter over 700,000 jabs were administered on Saturday alone, the UK has now\ndelivered over 60 million vaccinations, first and second doses combined. <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n

Data shows that around 72% of UK\nadults have now had a first dose, with 44% having received both doses. The\nPrime Minister tweeted, \u201cJab by jab this life-saving programme, unparalleled\nin our history, is getting us back to the things we love\u2026 Please get both your\nvaccines when it\u2019s your <\/em>turn.\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

Further\npositive news came over the weekend, as Public Health England research has identified that\nthe AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines are highly effective against\nthe Indian variant after two doses. Matt Hancock said receiving the second dose\nwas \u201cabsolutely vital\u201d <\/em>and that he felt “increasingly\nconfident”<\/em> the final stage of easing restrictions in England could\ntake place on 21 June.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

After the\ngovernment published advice for eight areas in England with high case numbers\nof the Indian variant, it was confirmed on Tuesday that the guidance is to be\nupdated for Kirklees, Blackburn with Darwen, Bedford, Bolton, Burnley,\nHounslow, Leicester and North Tyneside to clarify there are \u2018no local\nlockdowns<\/em>.\u2019 From Monday, people in Northern Ireland have been able to\nreturn to indoor hospitality venues and meet up to six people from two\nhouseholds indoors. In Wales, family and friends can now visit loved ones in\ncare homes, with Minister Mark Drakeford saying the \u201cchanges would improve\nthe quality of life for residents and their families.\u201d <\/em>In Scotland, Nicola\nSturgeon has urged people not to \u201close heart<\/em>\u201d as cases increase, albeit\nfrom a very low base. Glasgow remains in level three, with restrictions to be\nreviewed later this week.   <\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

Biohub launched<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

On Monday,\nthe World Health Organization (WHO) and the Swiss Confederation announced plans\nfor a global BioHub facility, to serve as a centre to enhance the rapid sharing\nof viruses and other pathogens between partners and laboratories globally. Dr\nTedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General said, \u201cthis is an important\nstep towards facilitating this flow of information<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

UK inflation rate more than doubles in April<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

The latest inflation figures for the UK were\nreleased by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) last week, showing a jump\nto 1.5% in April from 0.7% in March. Prices have been driven higher due to a\nrise in energy and clothing costs, resulting in inflation climbing at its\nfastest rate since March 2020. April’s inflation rise had been predicted by\neconomists due to the easing of lockdown restrictions, but there are concerns\nthat soaring inflation could push central banks to raise interest rates.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

Further ONS data released on Friday, showed retail sales jumped 9.2% in\nApril, due to the reopening of non-essential shops last month, which saw\nclothing sales increasing by 70% compared to March.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

CBI advises \u2018Seize the Moment\u2019<\/em>     <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

The Confederation of British\nIndustry (CBI) has launched a \u2018landmark\u2019<\/em> economic plan for the next\ndecade entitled \u2018Seize the Moment\u2019<\/em>, urging both business and government\nto bury the Brexit hatchet and focus on building a fairer, greener economy. The\nCBI said it was ready to play a more proactive role in transforming the economy\nand it sees this year as a \u2018once-in-a-generation opportunity to unite and\nagree to transform the UK economy.\u2019<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

US stocks climb as unemployment\nfalls<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

American firms are cutting fewer\njobs as the economy strengthens, with new claims for unemployment benefit from\nUS workers falling to a new pandemic low of 444,000, down from 478,000 in the\nprevious week, the lowest since 14 March 2020. The positive job market news\nresulted in all major US equity indices climbing last Thursday. US stocks\ncontinued to climb on Monday as stocks benefiting from the economic reopening\nled the advance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
