{"id":1145,"date":"2021-06-16T12:06:09","date_gmt":"2021-06-16T11:06:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.contentdeployment.co.uk\/tomd\/?p=1145"},"modified":"2022-07-05T14:11:07","modified_gmt":"2022-07-05T13:11:07","slug":"news-in-review-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.contentdeployment.co.uk\/tomd\/2021\/06\/16\/news-in-review-7\/","title":{"rendered":"News in Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><em>\u2018<strong>Shared\nbeliefs and shared responsibilities are the bedrock of leadership and\nprosperity\u2019<\/strong><\/em><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong>The G7 Summit in Cornwall dominated headlines over the weekend, with<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;leaders of\nthe \u2018Group of Seven\u2019 (UK, US, Canada, Germany, France, Italy and Japan) meeting\nto discuss global worldwide issues, including vaccination programmes, economic\nrecovery and climate change.<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>The Prime Minister hosted the 47th\nG7 Summit, the first meeting of global leaders in two years, which was also\nattended by EU representatives, including Ursula von der Leyen, and other key\nindividuals from non-member countries, including Australian Prime Minister,\nScott Morrison.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>With a packed agenda to work through, after three intensive days of\nmeetings, a communiqu\u00e9 was published on the conclusion of the Summit, in which the\nleaders collectively outlined, <em>\u2018We gathered united by the principle that brought us together\noriginally, that shared beliefs and shared responsibilities are the bedrock of\nleadership and prosperity. Guided by this, our enduring ideals as free open\nsocieties and democracies, and by our commitment to multilateralism, we have\nagreed a shared G7 agenda for global action.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>Key pledges from the Summit include\nto:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong>End the pandemic and prepare for the future&nbsp;<\/strong>by driving an international effort to\nvaccinate the world by getting as many safe vaccines to as many people as\npossible, as fast as possible<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong>Reinvigorate our economies<\/strong>&nbsp;by advancing recovery plans that build on the financial\nsupport put in place during the pandemic<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong>Secure our future prosperity&nbsp;<\/strong>by championing freer, fairer trade within\na reformed trading system, a more resilient global economy, and a fairer global\ntax system <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong>Protect our planet&nbsp;<\/strong>by supporting a green revolution that creates jobs,\ncuts emissions and seeks to limit the rise in global temperatures<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong>Strengthen our partnerships&nbsp;<\/strong>with others around the world and develop\na new partnership to build back better for the world, through a step change in\nour approach to investment for infrastructure, including through an initiative\nfor clean and green growth.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>On Sunday, President Biden met the Queen at Windsor Castle, before progressing\nto Brussels for a meeting at the NATO headquarters, then rounding off his\nEuropean tour with a one-to-one meeting with Vladamir Putin on 16 June in\nGeneva.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong>\u2018Freedom Day\u2019 delayed<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>As anticipated, Boris Johnson confirmed that restrictions will not ease as initially hoped on 21 June. This will allow more people to get vaccinated, to contend with the sharp rise in infections due to the Delta variant. A review will be conducted in two weeks, with the government reserving the possibility of proceeding to step four and a full opening sooner than 19 July. Scientists have advised that the four-week delay would reduce the peak in hospital admissions by between a third and a half.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>Although most current restrictions will remain in place, the 30-person\nlimit on weddings and wakes will be removed on 21 June, but strict measures\nwill still apply, and will vary depending on the type of venue.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>Director General of the Confederation of British Industry,\nTony Danker, commented on the roadmap delay, <em>\u201cPublic health\ncomes first, so while a delay is regrettable, it\u2019s understandable. Most\nbusinesses favour certainty and irreversibility over speed\u2026 But we must\nacknowledge the pain felt by businesses in hospitality, leisure and live events.\nAt best they\u2019re operating with reduced capacity hitting revenues, and at worst,\nsome aren\u2019t open at all.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>Despite the delay to the road map, Chancellor Rishi Sunak confirmed\nthat the furlough scheme will not be extended. The scheme is scheduled to run\nuntil 30 September, with employers contributing from July.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>Around the UK \u2013 in Wales, rules will be reviewed on 21 June and in\nNorthern Ireland, a review will take place on 17 June. In Scotland, Nicola\nSturgeon has said that plans to move all areas to Level Zero COVID restrictions\non 28 June would \u201c<em>in all\nprobability<\/em>\u201d be paused.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong>UK\neconomic update<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>Data\nreleased last Friday by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that\nthe UK economy grew by 2.3% in April, its fastest monthly growth since July\n2020. This has been attributed to shoppers spending more as non-essential shops reopened, and people bought more cars\nand caravans. Chancellor Rishi Sunak said that the figures were &#8220;<em>a promising\nsign that our economy is beginning to recover.\u201d<\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>On\nTuesday, ONS said there were 197,000 more workers in payrolled employment in\nMay than in April and the unemployment rate fell to 4.7% in the three months to\nApril, down from 4.8% previously.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong>Here to\nhelp<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>Financial\nadvice is key, so please do not hesitate to get in contact with any questions\nor concerns you may have.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong>The value of investments can go down as well\nas up and you may not get back the full amount you invested.
