Launched over 30 years ago, DigiCash was the forerunner to\nthe swathe of cryptocurrencies we see today. There are around 7,500 digital\ntokens currently available in the market and over 1,600 dead coins listed,\nwhich are currencies that no longer exist.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong>Fishy business<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>Digital currency \u2018<em>SQUID<\/em>\u2019 recently launched a \u2018<em>rug\npull\u2019<\/em> manoeuvre, whereby the currency creators abandoned the project by\nexchanging virtual coins for real-world cash and drained liquidity from the\nproduct, driving the coin\u2019s value to zero. The currency creators pocketed the\n\u00a33m invested. Scams like this are a regular feature of the cryptocurrency\nmarket environment. Danny Knight, Quilter Investors\u2019 Head of investment\nDirectors recently referred to crypto investment as, <em>\u201cAn area of concern and\ncaution at the moment.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong>Standpoint<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>Along with regulatory concerns and a lack of clear guidance\nand transparency, Rick Eling Investment Director of Quilter Financial Planning,\nhas commented that crypto has <em>the \u201cfundamental characteristics of a bubble.\nIf people are buying stocks because the price has risen and for no other\nreason, it\u2019s a bubble.\u201d<\/em> On valuation, he added, <em>\u201chow do you work out\nwhat this thing is supposed to be worth? You can value an asset normally by\nlooking at what the underlying business activities are, the cash it generates,\nthe profit it generates, or you can find some utility for an asset\u2026 it doesn\u2019t\nhave any use or business activity behind it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p>He continued, <em>\u201cThe principles of long-term investments\nare eternal, you need to have a plan, you need to know how much risk you are\nwilling to take, you need a diversified managed portfolio and you need plenty\nof time, discipline and patience\u2026 Please don\u2019t think it (crypto) is a\nlegitimate alternative to real investment \u2013 because it isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hd-block hd-block-paragraph\">\n<p><strong><em>It is\nimportant to take professional advice before making any decision relating to\nyour personal finances.
